consumption & econ soci

o   Economic sociology has mainly focused on the producer-side (ex. corporations, business organizations, interlocking directorates, financial markets, industrial structure, and actors in such organizations, etc.). Zelizer (2005) said “Indeed, economic sociology grew up concentrating on production and distribution rather than consumption” (p.336). Balance is needed.
o   Consumption is another big area where intimacy meets economy (ex. Miller) or where economic behavior is nested in our everyday life, which means that consumption is a medium for connecting the intimate world (ex. family, intimate relations, culture, meaning, identity, taste and so on) and economic action.
o   The potential link between economic sociology and political sociology: Mass consumption, consumption society and the spread of consumerism may foster or hinder democracy. Also consumerism may lead to neoliberal ideology. (ex. “There is perceived ideological fit between the self-managing, enterprising, choosing self and the model citizen of neoliberal societies who shoulders the responsibility for maintaining social order through his or her “good” choices.” (Zukin and Maguire 2004)) (“expressive selfhood”?)
o   The potential link between economic sociology and cultural sociology: How culture affects economy and economy affects culture. Academic discussion on modernity and post-modernity also could be included here.

A Poverty Solution That Starts With a Hug

by Nicolas Kristof

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/08/opinion/sunday/kristof-a-poverty-solution-that-starts-with-a-hug.html?_r=1

PERHAPS the most widespread peril children face isn’t guns, swimming pools or speeding cars. Rather, scientists are suggesting that it may be “toxic stress” early in life, or even before birth.

This month, the American Academy of Pediatrics is issuing a landmark warning that this toxic stress can harm children for life. I’m as skeptical as anyone of headlines from new medical studies (Coffee is good for you! Coffee is bad for you!), but that’s not what this is.
Rather, this is a “policy statement” from the premier association of pediatricians, based on two decades of scientific research. This has revolutionary implications for medicine and for how we can more effectively chip away at poverty and crime.
Toxic stress might arise from parental abuse of alcohol or drugs. It could occur in a home where children are threatened and beaten. It might derive from chronic neglect — a child cries without being cuddled. Affection seems to defuse toxic stress — keep those hugs and lullabies coming! — suggesting that the stress emerges when a child senses persistent threats but no protector.
Cues of a hostile or indifferent environment flood an infant, or even a fetus, with stress hormones like cortisol in ways that can disrupt the body’s metabolism or the architecture of the brain.
The upshot is that children are sometimes permanently undermined. Even many years later, as adults, they are more likely to suffer heart disease, obesity, diabetes and other physical ailments. They are also more likely to struggle in school, have short tempers and tangle with the law.
The crucial period seems to be from conception through early childhood. After that, the brain is less pliable and has trouble being remolded.
“You can modify behavior later, but you can’t rewire disrupted brain circuits,” notes Jack P. Shonkoff, a Harvard pediatrician who has been a leader in this field. “We’re beginning to get a pretty compelling biological model of why kids who have experienced adversity have trouble learning.”
This new research addresses an uncomfortable truth: Poverty is difficult to overcome partly because of self-destructive behaviors. Children from poor homes often shine, but others may skip school, abuse narcotics, break the law, and have trouble settling down in a marriage and a job. Then their children may replicate this pattern.
Liberals sometimes ignore these self-destructive pathologies. Conservatives sometimes rely on them to blame poverty on the poor.
The research suggests that the roots of impairment and underachievement are biologically embedded, but preventable. “This is the biology of social class disparities,” Dr. Shonkoff said. “Early experiences are literally built into our bodies.”
The implication is that the most cost-effective window to bring about change isn’t high school or even kindergarten — although much greater efforts are needed in schools as well — but in the early years of life, or even before birth.
“Protecting young children from adversity is a promising, science-based strategy to address many of the most persistent and costly problems facing contemporary society, including limited educational achievement, diminished economic productivity, criminality, and disparities in health,” the pediatrics academy said in its policy statement.
One successful example of early intervention is home visitation by childcare experts, like those from the Nurse-Family Partnership. This organization sends nurses to visit poor, vulnerable women who are pregnant for the first time. The nurse warns against smoking and alcohol and drug abuse, and later encourages breast-feeding and good nutrition, while coaxing mothers to cuddle their children and read to them. This program continues until the child is 2.
At age 6, studies have found, these children are only one-third as likely to have behavioral or intellectual problems as others who weren’t enrolled. At age 15, the children are less than half as likely to have been arrested.
Evidence of the importance of early experiences has been mounting like snowflakes in a blizzard. For example, several studies examined Dutch men and women who had been in utero during a brief famine at the end of World War II. Decades later, those “famine babies” had more trouble concentrating and more heart disease than those born before or after.
Other scholars examined children who had been badly neglected in Romanian orphanages. Those who spent more time in the orphanages had shorter telomeres, a change in chromosomes that’s a marker of accelerated aging. Their brain scans also looked different.
The science is still accumulating. But a compelling message from biology is that if we want to chip away at poverty and improve educational and health outcomes, we have to start earlier. For many children, damage has been suffered before the first day of school.
As Frederick Douglass noted, “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”

NYT opinion article by Eamon Fingleton

(e.g. Blindside: Why Japan Is Still on Track to Overtake the U.S. By the Year 2000 같은

The stock market crash of 1929 and the subsequent Great Depression cost Fisher much of his personal wealth and academic reputation. He famously predicted, three days before the crash, "Stock prices have reached what looks like a permanently high plateau." Irving Fisher stated on October 21 that the market was "only shaking out of the lunatic fringe" and went on to explain why he felt the prices still had not caught up with their real value and should go much higher. On Wednesday, October 23, he announced in a banker’s meeting "security values in most instances were not inflated." For months after the Crash, he continued to assure investors that a recovery was just around the corner. Once the Great Depression was in full force, he did warn that the ongoing drastic deflation was the cause of the disastrous cascading insolvencies then plaguing the American economy because deflation increased the real value of debts fixed in dollar terms. Fisher was so discredited by his 1929 pronouncements and by the failure of a firm he had started that few people took notice of his "debt-deflation" analysis of the Depression. People instead eagerly turned to the ideas of Keynes. Fisher's debt-deflation scenario has made something of a comeback since 1980 or so.

China's Market-Oriented Reforms in Retreat

http://english.caixin.cn/2011-07-05/100275974.html

Economist: China's Market-Oriented Reforms in Retreat

Wu Jinglian, researcher at the Development and Research Center at the State Council, said reforms to the state economy have undergone a reversal of momentum since the start of the 2000s
(Beijing) - China's "market forces have regressed" as government agencies have started to play a more obstructive role in resource allocation, Wu Jinglian, one of China's foremost economists, said on July 4.
(Wu Jinglian/Li Mo)
Although the state economy no longer contributes a major portion to gross domestic product, it maintains a monopoly in sectors like petroleum, telecoms, railways and finance, Wu said in a keynote speech in the opening ceremony of a global conference sponsored by the International Economic Association.
Governments at various levels also have a huge hold over major economic resources such as land and capital, said Wu, who serves as a researcher of the Development and Research Center at the State Council.
China still lacks a legal foundation that is indispensable for a modern market economy. Government officials intervene in the market at their will through administrative means, said Wu.
China's market forces gained vigor when the pricing of goods was liberalized in the early 1990s and millions of township enterprises were privatized at the turn of the last century, said Wu.
Entering the 2000s, however, the reform of state-owned enterprises suffered a setback, and SOEs have inhabited an increasingly assertive role in the market at the expense of private businesses. "The government has acted more intrusively in the name of macro-economic regulation," said Wu.
In China, there have been two distinct views over the origins of China's rapid economic growth.
One view attributes the achievement to the "China model" marked by the domination of the state economy and the forceful regulation over the economy by the government.
The other view holds that the high-speed growth was the result of market-based reforms and the liberation of the entrepreneurial spirit of the people.
For this question, Wu noted the current growth model is unsustainable and has been built on investment that exploits resources and damages the environment.
Another consequence of strengthened government control over the distribution of resources and active intervention in economic activity is more corruption and a larger wealth gap, said Wu.

쩝...;

http://www.sisainlive.com/news/articleView.html?idxno=10532

12 Reasons Why China Is Heading For A Crash

일독할만함. 다만 중국 맨날 망할거라는데 도대체 언제 망할건지, 그리고 이런 글 쓰는 미국사람들 지네 나라 꼴도 말이 아니면서 중국 망할거라고 손가락질하는 모습은 또 얼마나 어처구니 없는지;;

- 얘네가 예전에 진짜 전세계 최고(깡패)였구나...하는 느낌이 건물들을 보면서 느껴짐;; 특히 부촌을 지날때는 후덜덜했음;
- 우리 학과에 런던에서 공부한 친구가 런던 가면, 유럽가면 진짜 좋다고, 하버드 있는 캠브리지를 가리키며 This is nothing..이랬는데 진짜 맞는 말임을 느꼈음;

- 3일밖에 안있은 주제에...;;

Political Economy
