consumption & econ soci

o   Economic sociology has mainly focused on the producer-side (ex. corporations, business organizations, interlocking directorates, financial markets, industrial structure, and actors in such organizations, etc.). Zelizer (2005) said “Indeed, economic sociology grew up concentrating on production and distribution rather than consumption” (p.336). Balance is needed.
o   Consumption is another big area where intimacy meets economy (ex. Miller) or where economic behavior is nested in our everyday life, which means that consumption is a medium for connecting the intimate world (ex. family, intimate relations, culture, meaning, identity, taste and so on) and economic action.
o   The potential link between economic sociology and political sociology: Mass consumption, consumption society and the spread of consumerism may foster or hinder democracy. Also consumerism may lead to neoliberal ideology. (ex. “There is perceived ideological fit between the self-managing, enterprising, choosing self and the model citizen of neoliberal societies who shoulders the responsibility for maintaining social order through his or her “good” choices.” (Zukin and Maguire 2004)) (“expressive selfhood”?)
o   The potential link between economic sociology and cultural sociology: How culture affects economy and economy affects culture. Academic discussion on modernity and post-modernity also could be included here.
